The retailer who was quite literally the elephant in the room has been finally tamed and has now been made to depend solely on the consumer!! Very varied topics handled so deftly!!
All I can say is that anything in abundance loses its value. A classical example is the largest elephant population in the world that is present in Botswana. Ask those staying up north closer to thIs unique phenomenon and they will tell you that given an opportunity they would like to kill all the elephants. In these large numbers they are an absolute nuisance. The other interesting fact is the government killing 50 elephants every year through legally permitting them to be hunted!! This is the only method to control it's burgeoning population!!
Hi Prasanna, Both the articles are very informative. The article on Consumer Protection Act is so useful and article on elephants is very interesting. Even though l don't take coffee, I enjoyed this Filter Coffee. Bye
Very interesting. Delighted to know your additional talent -writing and storytelling. Apart from your well known legal expertise, I recall your singing skills. I always remember your old golden songs especially one you had sung during one of the TPC get-togethers at Bangkok. Wish you good health and success in all your endeavours. Raj, Bangkok
Your post has been both informative and interesting. And your inimitable style has been riveting. You have focused the attention of readers on the latest legal updates in consumer protection in a simple and useful manner. It is time that the Corporates / Vendors instead of trumpeting on the quality / service and customer centricity on different Foras and in advertising are made to see the ground reality. Alongside the legal provisions the underlying processes for the consumers have also to become user friendly and speedy. More from you in these regards will be welcome.
Your video on the elephants were superb, and the narratives / stories were lot of fun.
Really liked this edition, Pras. From the new consumer protection act to elephants, such a wide selection of topics couldn’t have been dealt with in a more seamless manner than what you have done ! Informative is what you could call this chapter both on the subject of the new law as well as on elephants :)
Here is another mater piece from Master Narrator, Mr. Pras. The info on Consumer protection is most illuminating and on Elephants is interesting and informative. It was also fun to read abut elephants in idioms. It reminds you of Johnson`s Dictionary. Please keep going.
It’s time advertisers were made accountable and your explanation of the act was very clear and understandable.
Loved the elephant part . One of my fav animals .
Sad truth is the training part which the elephants undergo is very harsh .
I was very upset recently when the pregnant elephant was fed a pineapple bomb and eventually succumbed to her wounds and the pain . I wrote some lines on that I can share with u-
Hi Pras. Good to know about the changes to the Consumer protection act. But why immunity to the celebrities ? Misleading advertisement by a film hero, landed a pregnant lady in trouble. This story was narrated to me by my doctor client who is a gynecologist. A pregnant lady was forced to eat Kesar Pan Parag, every day by her mother-in-law, because she believed that it has got real Kesar in it and it is good for the baby in the womb. That Kesar Pan Parag costs Re1/- or so and for that a Hindi film hero advocates about the product. Pan parag is a health hazard and still the people believe that it is good as a hero promotes the same. I feel even the promoters should be punished so that this kind of damage will reduce in future.
This is great. In a country of millions of NFP organisations, we see very little activism to support an individual buyer. Somehow the perception seems to be that if you can afford to buy, you can afford to be cheated. Perhaps some community minded lawyers can create support groups for online advice to consumers on how best hey can protect their rights.
Years ago I met a lady by name Jaji Mandanna. She told me so much about consumer protection and rights. Finally I invited her to address members of Lions Club on the consumer protection and the members were thrilled about her knowledge and subject.
Years ago I read a book of elephant jokes. When my daughter was 5 or 6years old she used to worry me to tell stories. To divert her attention I told her elephant jokes. She used to to tell those to her school friends in Frank Anthony Jr school.
Really great read and although did not read with morning coffee but morning tea, but a great substitute from the mundane reads!
The bytes on consumer protection act are put so well that any layman can understand- so different from all the complicated articles about it going around. Simply just tells you Seller Beware!
I did not know those facts about elephants and also the sad truth about life of an elephant and it’s mahouts! Makes me curious to read more!
Good that a new consumer protection legislation has taken effect. The provision for e filling and video conferencing. filing anywhere. Introduction of Product liability and class action are great ones indeed. Thanks for giving that update. Coming from a well known lawyer it itself makes it really worthwhile. Liked you piece on the Elephant man too and true to you liked those word plays too.
A coroIlary to the 3rd quiz - modified to fit the Kannadiga elephants :)) - 'How does the Bandipur elephant talk to its Nagarhole cousin' - Answer: by 'Trunk Call' .. :)
Enjoyed the article on elephants. Fascinating!

“ She ran hungry and hurt
What is this agony- how can she end it ?
Into the river she plunges
Cooling her blasted and wounded mouth.
She refuses to leave the water
No refuge or safety on land
They send in her sturdy brethren though
Trying to nudge her out onto the bank.
But she bids them a sad farewell
Telling them to leave her there,
There is nothing left for her here
No one can help her , Alas!
She thinks of the little one in her womb-
“I’ll be your shelter my baby
This world is not for us
Let’s move into God’s own heart
His country is not for us!”
He gathered her back into his arms
His tears a mute apology-
It rained as never before
that day in God’s Own country !”
