Pras, rainy days are indeed all about unexpected occurrences and unforseen circumstances. And the need for a nest egg. But how big the egg be ? There is no telling. Given the vagaries of life, rising cost of living and cost of medical care, it defies all forecast and speculation. Today hospitalization is akin to going to the cleaners. It is best you avoid commuting on the same road. If you think being insured you have provided for a Rainy Day, think again. The guys will show you the small print at the time of settling the hospital bills that you are not covered for your particular treatment. While there is no denying money is important, it is equally or even more important that you put off the Rainy Day ! I invested in the following measures and I dare say I am reaping reasonably good benefits ! I believe I have put off the monsoon, at least for the time being !

Invest in good health. The best investment you can ever make. Become conscious of your diet and exercise. This does not mean you turn into an ascetic. The magic word is moderation. Besides saving you money, good health will help you live on your own terms. Children love healthy parents !

Have your own roof to live under. Visit children when invited. Remember the laws of demand and supply !

Invest in your best friend, your wife. She is the only one who will take in all your nonsence and still feed you and keep you alive.

Don’t stop learning. Be well informed. Children should find value when they talk to you. Keep all the unsolicited advise to yourself. Speak when spoken to.

Have a sense of humour. Keep a joke or two ready for your grand children. They are your trusted allies and the best way to stay connected.

Finally, its friends that make you daily journey interesting. A drink or two (remember moderation ) wont kill you. Even if it did, what a way to go !!!!

Warren Buffet advice are generally very apt and good for the subject of saving for a rainy day. I remember his many quotes were he says some thing that you don't need to stay in a big house or travel in big car. Many of which we don't really follow in trying to keep up with the Joneses. Warrent Buffet could probably do it. May be we lesser mortals can't lest we be seen as not in the 'league' of the Joneses. But his advice of spending after saving is worth following.

I was wondering if the idiom was coined after seeing ants storing up food for rainy day/days.

Cricketers can be runout or bowled out. You have to continue....

Liked your post and reminded me of the Pygmy deposit of Syndicate Bank started to help unorganised sector folk have the Pygmy collector come to their place of work / home and collect whatever they would like to put by for a rainy day. Money simply grows however small a daily saving is put by as it’s easy to spend but consciously saving has always helped in times of need ! Inculcated this habit early in life and has really paid off ! Thanks again for sharing your great thoughts through FC . Please do take a good and refreshing break but shall be waiting for stronger decoctions to be brewing in the interim for your much awaited FCs🙏💐👏

You took me down memory lane when you spoke of Pigmy deposits. As a struggling lawyer I used to daily give the pygmy collector Rs.5 and would feel exhilarated when it reached Rs.500. Thank you Naina for your comments.

Stay gainfully engaged as long as physically and mentally possible....the vulnerability to the rainy day will dramatically reduce. Inflation makes holes in your umbrella. So we must use the salt and pepper in our hair(wisdom) to continue to contribute. Importantly, it keeps the machine in working order.

Retirement for me is "working" with more control over your own time and priorities!
