Shouldn’t governance be more than just adherence to laws?

Hopefully, good organisations are built on a foundation of Values, adherence to which creates good governance.

One NRI businessman once told me “Business goes through three stages. First, Get On stage, where you do what ever you have to, to survive. The next is Get Honest stage, where you comply with all laws (I did not have the courage to ask him what he did in the first stage). But, there is one more stage, Get Honourable stage, where you strictly follow your values and go beyond the laws and the rules, based on what is the right thing to do”.

He told me this after he refused to use a legal loophole which would have saved him millions of dollars.
