ಮೌನೇನ ಕಲಹಂ ನಾಸ್ತಿ

ಮೌನಂ ಸಮ್ಮತಿ ಲಕ್ಷಣಂ

I got reminded of these two on Silence and its virtues.

Silence speaking volumes is better than speech at high volume !! Thank you for your comments and also to know that you are a regular reader. I look forward to your comments now that you figured on posting them.

I had encountered another type of silence. For my 80th birthday I wanted to call my naval friends and have a party. But my wife and daughter insisted that it should be a family affair. When I reached the restaurant I was greeted by over sixty of my naval friends and their families. I was stunned and there was a long pause before I realized what had happened. Silence of surprise which was result of conspiracy of silence by my wife and daughter.

Radio silence is also an electronic warfare protocol in the military that prohibits all wireless and radar transmissions which will help the enemies to detect your presence and position.

My son had recommended the book "21 lessons for 21st Century" by Yuval Noah Harari (Alvin Toffler of this decade). After reading that book I told my son that in the 21st chapter of the book he describes how Vipasana Meditation helped him. My son told me that he knows about Vipasana Meditation which he learned from my wife more than 20 years ago. I was dumbfounded. It was silence of realization of my ignorance.

Under the present circumstance, we can practice Vipasana meditation at home. All that we have to do is switch off TV and phone. Anyway contact with outside world is almost nil.

Lovely piece yet again!

As a primary school student, when I referred to a turtle as tortoise, my teacher had exclaimed " alas! you have turned turtle there".

So much about silence! I had almost forgotten the “Silence! Finger on your lips!” as we filed past the teacher who boomed in school. I didn't know the origin of the adage 'cat got your tongue'.

What to say about the power of silence in music as well. The silence between the notes! Claude Debussy the French composer opined that "music is not in the notes but in the silence between"

And, your choice of illustrations is super. The boy's picture goes to reiterate the idiom " a picture is worth a thousand words"

Speechlessness jarred my memory of a embarrassing situation I faced as a 9th grader: it was a poetry reciting contest snd I kept repeating the first line 😀

And ‘radio silence’ over phone is superimposed with ‘comfort noise’ so you don’t feel like the person hung up on you

Sure "silence is Golden" sir. Lot can be expressed through it rather than speaking. And i too completely agree with Mr. Harish .

From the Egyptian idiom to the current ‘covid’ situation, ‘silent’ly u took us through the various ‘decibel levels’, in an impactful tone👍

What a coincidence.. it’s my mother’s birthdate and your topic today ‘silence’is synonymous with my mother’s character and trait.. woman of few words, silent observer ... with a ‘profound’ attitude... 👍

In these days of ‘silence’, which has become the order of the day, I reminisce her silent nature 🙏

As I come to the concluding paragraph , ‘silently’ I sip my filter kapi , enjoying what u ‘sounded’👌

With Pras giving me a challenge to find a word that had turtle in them, I turned to our all-knowing Uncle Google and found this one “turtleback”. Am sure that the expert wordsmith that I know here on earth, Prasanna, would have known of that anyway and he may have reasons for excluding it.

However, today morning when I first saw the title of today’s FC-“Silence”, the first thing that came to mind is that old song “The sound of silence”. There are so many descriptions on the meanings of the lyrics of that song that it would not be justified to begin that here.

I particularly liked that picture of the boy with stage fright. The expression in his eyes said it all. NO need of any description. The power of silence is indeed golden. Sometimes it’s better not to say anything at all. It will convey more than any words could. There are many stories of when a group of people would suddenly turn so mute that you could even hear a pin drop leading to the oft used term “pin-drop silence”. Shocked into silence as it would then be said.

Geetha would've got offended if I had associated her with sign language. She is a auditory verbal therapist and she helps children with implants speak.
