I was not aware of the terms Blue pencil and Blue flame.
Navy Blue is the dark blue color of Naval winter uniform. It also stand for persons who are outstanding sportsmen who represented the Navy and wear the Navy Blazer.
Peacock blue is another shade of blue which is a very pleasing color.
Blue book lists the order of precedence for VIPs which is the reference book for protocol department of the government. Blue Danube is the river which flows through ten countries in Europe. Blue Danube is also the unofficial national anthem of Austria.
Indian Navy graduated to a Blue Water Navy from a Coastal Navy once it acquired a tanker (for refueling at sea) and an Aircraft Carrier.
Lovely read as usual. I don't know why, but when I read your invite for more suggestions I struck upon Cordon Bleu. So I looked up its meaning if this word had relation to blue and this is what I found. Apart from being a ref to the highest standard in cooking, its also a bird called African waxbill and Chicken corden blue means it has bagged the blue ribbon a french term for excellence, and one more which says Bleu rhymes with dieu and used together to take the sting out of nasty words. As I said earlier, such posts prods the brain to know more. Thank you
Adding to the blues - Big Blue: IBM. So named because its logo was deep blue and perhaps also because it was the bluest of blue chips on the stock exchange.
You could do good FCs on the rest of the rainbow as well, Pras. Red, Green and Yellow should give particularly rich material 🍻.
Thank you Pras for that piece on blue in FC. Learned a few new usages like ‘to burn with a low blue flame’. Now I also understand that the term Blue Baby came to be due to skin turning blue due to decreased haemoglobin in the infant’s blood.
Regarding Blue, I just realised that we have different shades of blue as a colour- Sky blue, Navy blue, Neptune blue etc. Speaking of this, the planet Neptune appears blue in colour because of the presence of methane gas in the atmosphere. We have also a similar term for planet earth, which is said to be due to the abundance of water on its surface.
However the term Blue Ocean in management jargon or strategy refers a new market with little competition or any sort of barriers preventing innovation. The term thus refers to the vast "empty ocean" of market options generally seen in a new market or when innovation appears. So obvious operating in a blue ocean market has its advantages and it’s could be a way to avoid the “deep red” that competition may bring to the companies financials.
As for marketing, we have names like Blue Dart which was India’s largest logistics company and which was acquired by DHL, if I remember right, in 2004. Then there is Bluetooth which we now use so often. A little triva, that may not be known to many, is that the technology was named after a 10th-century Scandinavian king whose nickname was Blatand, which literally translates from Danish to "Bluetooth”. But why name the tech “Bluetooth” you may ask? I understand that this was because, like the king who united Scandinavia, Bluetooth intended to unite the PC and cellular industries. May be if, we in India, had developed the technology, we would call it “Sardar” in honour of his uniting India.
Politically speaking, in the US we have what is called the Blue or Red states depending on who they choose to side with in an election - Democrats or Republicans. And in sports, like boxing, we usually have Blue and Red Corners, at opposite ends which for identification purposes is allotted to each of two opponents.
As usual, Pras you end your piece referring to the current pandemic and the need for us to be safe. It’s true that this pandemic has caused many of us to gets the blues. This of course refers to the feeling of sadness/loneliness/grief that this pandemic must be causing us all. I do hope this is a one-in-a-blue moon experience and soon we will be singing away happy and carefree and not singing the blues as many of us now are forced to do.
Dear W/Bro, You made my Sunday lift up from the Blue with so many Blues which were unheard of like the Blue Pencil which is really informative. Brother you missed out The Blue Whale the largest living mammal.
Another is the Bluetooth which is neither Blue nor a tooth. The most dangerous appliance, have known people walking on Railway tracks with the Blue tooth fitted and got rundown as the Locomotives hooting was unheard. My grandson often turns a deaf ear to me and finally notice that he is Bluetoothed
True blue article sir….. really enjoyed it… as a teacher I can completely relate with “Once in Blue moon”😜( a remark often used by me for students who show once in a while)😊
So many ‘blue’s... made my sunday😊.. got to know some of them today 😇.. the blue ring again😀..the ‘blue pencil’ rule I got to know recently , due to my association with the group I am with👍..your topics are so varied dear Pras.. and today I realised they are ‘color’ful too👌..’Mediterranean blue’ is is one more I think of... and in my bucket list to go on a cruise in the Mediterranean blue seas😃
So many "blue" idioms! Did not know about the "Big Blue". The others I can think of "blue planet", to be beaten up "black and blue" and ofcourse the "bluebook" for legal citation!
I am also reminded of the song "True Blue" by Madonna which was quite a sensation in the 80s.
Pras opened a floodgate of Blues.

Blues music comes to my mind and the Rhythm and Blues genre of music, though not a saying or idiom.
