I now know that I push a task out and finish it close to the deadline because that maximizes the joys of completing it. Additionally I remember it without effort, ha! Those little doses of anxiety, I shall live with for the adrenalin rush close to completion!
I am touched by the fact that you were inspired to write on this subject after getting my humble WhatsApp text. You have done an excellent job in analysing the concept thoroughly in detail with expert inputs. Congratulations! I hope I will be inspiring you this way in future too.
Every task one wishes to perform generally gets processed in the brain and gets prioritised. Thereafter, the Zeigarnik effect kicks in when the task remains unfinished . But the chores that my wife shortlists as ‘To Do’ gets processed in my brain as ‘Do it’ ! It by passes the brain and is communicated directly to the limbs. Consequently, a comment to share about Filter Coffee is procrastinated as it requires the attention it truly deserves. I dont wish to leave it to the limbs ! But by the time I get to respond, the next edition is served steaming. Since my wife is away on a temple tour, FC was listed at the top of the ‘To Do’ list this morning and hence no need to experience the Zeigernik effect !!
Newton's first law of motion perhaps scientifically explains the best root cause of procrastination! May the force be with you and all of us- procrastinators
Brilliant topics you pick up ! Congratulations again on wonderful flavour of your filter coffee which is as usual a refreshing cuppa and ushers in positive vibes and energy . Thoroughly , enjoyed reading it and I have a bucket list of unfinished tasks that have collected over the busy and hectic years being what it is in my medical field and sorting out priorities one by one . Nevertheless , worth doing so however late in the day without getting stressed out at the time lost or seeing the long list of unfinished things. Feel good every time one is picked up from the bucket and put out in the clothes - line to dry 😊. Thanks once again . Admire you for picking up relevant and interesting topics all hidden under your hat !👍👌🙏
I learned about ZE when I was studying psychology . It made a lot of sense and I remember understanding when it was at play for various situations. Also if you think of completed tasks as neatly packed boxes , all done and dusted , placed neatly at the back of your mind , then those open boxes , untidy and things spilling out are always at the top of your mind and calling out to be closed up. An unfinished task makes you uneasy, and causes a low level of agitation- and also gives you the feeling that you have ‘forgotten something’! Did I lock the door or cupboard, turn off the stove, take my medicine this morning, keep that bill safe in my bag etc etc… and thereby serves as a natural alarm system or reminding device .
Now after typing all this and if I get distracted or forget to post it … I’m sure Zeigarnik will be tap dancing all day long in my mind !!!! :)
Thank you very much Gopi for sharing this with others who can benefit from this. Much appreciated.
My "to do list" are categorized as follows
1) Have to do... Work related.... Satisfaction!
2) like to do.... Interest related.... Enjoyment!
3) must do.... Wife related..... Relief!

I got many solutions in my life by reading this.
So I decided to share it with my hearty youngers. And when I read this and narrated it to my nephew and niece, they all also got very motivated.
Thank you sir 🙏🏿
